Waxing Myths to Steer Clear Of
It’s almost that time of the year where we get to slip into our new bikinis and show off those flawless legs. With summer right around the corner, we get to pack up the winter layers and finally show some skin!
For many of us, summer means rushing to the salon and investing in waxing sessions to pull off unwanted hair. This can be from legs, arms, bikini line, back, belly…basically anywhere you’ve got a little unsightly fuzz.
There are quite a few ways to remove unwanted hair but waxing is by far the most cost-efficient. This means you’ll probably have to go to the salon at least once a month for silky smooth but at least you won’t have to worry about a stubble for a few weeks.
Unfortunately, there are some waxing myths floating around the beauty world that preventing some ladies (and some men) from becoming hair-free!
Let’s debunk some common waxing myths that are stopping you from being the Best U!
Myth 1: It Causes Ingrowns
Ingrown hairs are hairs that either curl back or grow sideways into the skin. These are most prominent amongst people with curly hair but everyone can have them.
Other than laser-hair removal, all temporary forms of hair removal will cause ingrown. It usually occurs when hair isn’t properly removed from its follicle, bends inward and grown into the skin. They can look like moles from a distance and usually aren’t painful.
If you’re avoiding waxing because of ingrown hairs, you’re making a mistake. Compared to shaving, waxing causes significantly fewer ingrown hairs.
Regular exfoliation loosens up ingrown hair and prevents follicles from being clogged by dead skin cells. DO NOT tweeze ingrown hairs as open follicles can easily become infected with bacteria.
Myth 2: Waxing Causes Your Skin to Sag Over Time
Sure there is some pulling of the skin involved in a waxing session but it will not cause your skin to loosen up.
Our faces are most prone to developing wrinkles due to over exposure to the elements. Even though there is some tugging involved in facial waxing, it won’t make your skin sag.
The skin’s elasticity is determined by your genes and what’s you’re putting into your body. Staying hydrated and protecting yourself against sun damage is enough to keep your skin plump and wrinkle free – waxing has got nothing to do with it!
Myth 3: You’ll Need to Grow Your Hair Out
Your hair just needs to be a ¼ of an inch long in order for you to get yourself waxed. Ideally, estheticians will prefer that you have longer hair than shorter hair because it’s much easier to remove the hair from the root but that doesn’t mean you’ll have to let it grow out.
Myth 4: Hair Grows Back Thicker
This couldn’t be more wrong. Hair is naturally thicker at the root and gets thinner as it grows. When you shave, you cut of the thin part of the hair, leaving the thicker part exposed. However, when you wax, you’re removing the hair from the follicle.
With regular waxing, your hair will actually get thinner.
Myth 5: You can’t Wax When Your Pregnant
You can wax whenever you need to, just be aware that your skin may be hypersensitive when you’re pregnant.
